A phased approach to introducing agentic capabilities to WordPress while maintaining 100% backwards compatibility.

Phase 1: Foundation (Q1 2026) ✅ COMPLETE

Goal: Core infrastructure without breaking changes

  • ✅ Introduce Agent_Base class
  • ✅ Add agent hooks alongside existing hooks
  • ✅ Create memory/context storage API
  • ✅ Implement basic audit logging
  • ✅ Release as feature plugin for testing
  • ✅ Build 10 prototype agents
  • ✅ Launch marketplace website

Status: Complete – Alpha released January 2026

Phase 2: Plugin API (Q2 2026) 🔄 IN PROGRESS

Goal: Enable third-party agent plugins

  • ✅ Tool registry API
  • ✅ Plugin.json agent manifest
  • Agent_Base base class for plugins
  • ✅ Approval queue system
  • 🔄 Plugin developer documentation
  • 🔄 Licensing API refinement

Backwards Compatibility: 100% – Non-agent plugins unaffected

Phase 3: Frontend Integration (Q3 2026)

Goal: User-facing agent capabilities

  • JavaScript Agent API
  • Theme agent configuration
  • Block editor agent blocks
  • REST API endpoints
  • Reference frontend implementation

Backwards Compatibility: 100% – Themes opt-in to agent features

Phase 4: Core Integration (Q4 2026)

Goal: Agent features in WordPress core

  • Merge feature plugin to core
  • Admin UI for agent management
  • Built-in content agent (basic)
  • Built-in admin agent (basic)
  • Performance optimization

Backwards Compatibility: 100% – Agents disabled by default

Phase 5: Ecosystem (2027+)

Goal: Thriving agent ecosystem

  • Agent marketplace/directory
  • Premium agent capabilities
  • Enterprise features
  • Advanced multi-agent orchestration
  • Community agent sharing
